Manchester City Eliminated From The Champions League
Manchester City played a 3-1 game against Monaco on 15th of March. Their loss means no further advancement in the Champions League, leaving them with a 6-6 aggregate with Monaco’s victory due to away goals.
Monaco was dominating the whole first half. They scored twice till the break with Kylian Mbappe’s close-ranged shot and Tavares’ successful attempt.
City didn’t muster a single effort in the first half. Their first contribution could be seen in the 65th minute when Sergio Aguero launched the ball to be sharply saved by the keeper, Danijel Subasic.
They scored in the 71st minute when Leroy Sane broke past home defence launching past Subasic. They went in front with the aggregate score at that time, but after Tiemoue Bakayako’s goal 13 minutes before the end, they couldn’t force their win afterward.
City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, won this competition twice with Barcelona and was eliminated now for the first time at this stage.
After their loss, Leicester City remains the only English team in the Champions’ League quarter-finals.
Monaco gained quickly the upper hand in the first half. With City’s sluggishness from the first minutes of the game, it was hard for them to regain the advantage later in the second half.
The home side pressured the opponents often hindering their ball possession by driving them constantly into errors. They were lastly the runners-up in this competition in 2004.
